Celebrating Women Who Have Paved the Way and Those That Continue to Make the Future Bright

Women’s History Month celebrates the contributions women have made historically in science, law, politics, sports, arts, entertainment, culture, business, and more. Honorable figures such as Harriet Tubman, Amelia Earhart, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Betty Friedan, and Frida Kahlo are often associated with Women’s History Month, however there are many more to name that have contributed to bettering society through their efforts.

The actual celebration originated as a weeklong observance of women’s contributions to culture, history, and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa. A few years later, other school districts and organizations across the country started participating in honoring these noble women. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. After being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed the petition which designated the month of March 1987 as Women’s History Month. For over 34 years, the United States has honored and recognized women that have inspired our nation to use their voice and be the change that they wish to see in the world.

This year we wanted to take part in celebrating Women’s History Month by honoring a few of our exemplary clients. We asked them what it is like to be a woman working in the Real Estate industry. Here is what they had to say…

Bridget Zamora - Del Taco Director of Real Estate

When I entered the industry in 2013, the economy was on an upswing but commercial real estate was still feeling some loss from The Great Recession. There really weren’t a lot of women and it was intimidating to be so outnumbered. In the beginning, I found that people automatically underestimated me because I was young and a woman. It didn’t bother me because I got great satisfaction from exceeding those expectations. Early in my career, I received some great advice to not feel the pressure to act like a man, and instead embrace being a woman. This really gave me the courage to just be myself and I found that was enough to not only compete in a male dominated industry, but to win.

Having been in the restaurant real estate industry for over 35 years, I have seen a lot of positive change in opportunities for women.  When I became a real estate manager for a fast food company in the early “80’s, there was only one other woman in the entire department.  Now, I am so proud to see so many wonderful women in all phases of the development process – from brokerage, in-house real estate, engineering, and project management to operations.  I know many feel there is still a long way to go, but based on my experience, we have come a long way!

There are a few career fields that get romanticized and real estate tends to be one of those fields. It is indeed a beautiful mess and I can't imagine doing anything else.

I've had this amazing career by surrounding myself with the best in the business that helped make me a better team member,  better leader, and overall better person . Those relationships and mentors are priceless and I am forever grateful.
